Network Protocols

A protocol is a set of rules that governs the communication between computers on a network. Many different types of network protocols and standards are required to ensure that your computer can communicate with another computer located on the next desk or half-way around the world.

Some of the network protocols are as follows:

HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
 HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the world wide web. HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.e.g, when you enter a URL in your browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to the wen server directly to fetch and transmit the requested Web page.HTTP is called a stateless protocol because each command is executed independently, without any knowledge of the commands that came before it.

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  TCP/IP is the communication protocols for the Internet. It defines the rules, computers must follow to communicate with each other over the internet. This protocol is responsible for finding path for destination. It also splits the message into several datagrams, if it does not fit in one datagram.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
   FTP is a means of transferring a file from one computer to another. FTP is commonly used for uploading a Web page to a Web server, so that it may be seen on the World Wide Web (WWW). A special program, called a client, is usually needed to use FTP.

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
  Internet is accessed through dedicated leased lines. PPP can be used to connect telephone dial-up lines to Internet. The communication takes place through a high speed modem.The user needs to install PPP drives at the time of creating a dial-up connection.  

Remote Login (Telnet)
   Telnet is a protocol used for creating a connection with a remote computer.Once your telnet client establishes a connection to the remote host, telnet client becomes a virtual terminal, allowing you to communicate with the remote host from your computer.It establishes a connection either with commands line client or with a programmatic interface.Telnet provides an error free connection, which is always faster than the latest conventional modems.
