Benefits and Evolution of Computer Networking

The following are the important benefits of a computer network:

(1) Facilitate Communication :- Using a network, people can communicate efficiently and easily via e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, telephones, video telephone calls and video conferencing.
(ii) Permit Sharing of Files, Data and Other Types of Information :- In a network environment, authorised users may access data and information stored on other computers on the network. It also helps the users to share data files etc.
(iii) Application Sharing :- Applications can be shared over the network and this allows implementation of client/server applications.
(iv) Access to Remote Database :- This allows users to access remote database, e.g. airline reservations database may be access for ticket booking.

Evolution of Networking :-
Evolution of Networking are as follows:

(i) ARPANET :- ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was a large wide area network sponsored by the United States Department of Defence, whose goal was to connect computers at different universities and U.S defence. It was established in 1969. ARPANET was the world's first operational packet switching network and the first network to implement TCP/IP also.In mid 80's, the National Science Foundation (NSF) created a new network called NSFnet, which was more capable than ARPANET.

(ii) Internet INTERconnection NETwork :- The Internet is a network of the interlinked computer networking worldwide, which is accessible to the general public. Internet is such a huge network of  several different interlinked networks relating to the business, government, academic and even smaller domestic networks.
Therefore, Internet is known as the network of all the other networks. These networks enable the Internet to be used for various important functions, which include the several means of communication like the file transfer, the online chat and even the sharing of the documents and website on the WWW or the world Wide Web.

(iii) Interspace :- Interspace provides the most advanced form of communication available on the Internet today. It is a client/server program that allows multiple users to communicate online with real-time video, audio and chat in dynamic 3D environments. It is a vision of what the internet will become tomorrow, when users cross-correlate information in multiple sources.
